Baldness can be a distressing problem, and is more common in men. Men
who have an inherited tendency toward baldness find that the problem is
a progressive one which usually begins in the twenties or thirties and
continues for several decades.
Treatments:
Many treatments for baldness have been attempted including topical medications,
rearrangement of the scalp, scalp expanders, and removal of bald areas
(scalp reduction). One treatment, however, has demonstrated clear superiority
in terms of natural appearance and a full head of hair: the hair transplant.
Hair Transplant:
Hair transplant surgery is based upon the principle that certain hairs
are resistant to the effects of balding. When these hairs are re-located
onto the top of the scalp, they maintain their resistance to the effects
of balding. These hairs exist below the crown on the back and sides of
the head.
During hair transplant surgery, small areas of bald-resistant hairs are
harvested from this area. They are then divided up under microscopic guidance
into tiny grafts containing one to four hairs each. The grafts are then
placed in the scalp on the top of the head where the hair is needed.
The Day of Surgery:
Surgery is performed in the office under sedation and takes about one
half day. You will be able to go home the same day, but will require a
driver. You will be sent home with a dressing on your head and will return
to the office the following day for a dressing change. Within two days,
you will be able to gently shampoo your hair and will be able to return
to public wearing a hat. You will be able to return to your normal routine
within five days, but should avoid exercising for two to three weeks.
Results:
The hairs which are transplanted initially fall out and require two to
four months to regenerate. Therefore, the result of the hair transplant
is not evident for several months.
One to Three Sessions:
With each session, several hundred grafts are placed in the top of the
head. There is, however, a limit as to how many can be placed due to issues
of blood supply and healing. Depending on the degree of baldness, most
men require one to four sessions of hair transplantation in order to achieve
the desired result. Each session is performed at six month intervals.
Satisfaction:
Hair transplant patients have an overwhelming degree of satisfaction due
to the ease of the procedure and the overall natural appearance of the
final result.
